You need to gain entry clearance before you reach the UK - entry cannot be granted once you have arrived, other than for purely tourist purposes

NEW ! " If you are a NZ passport holder going to the UK for more than 6 months, you'll be asked to provide fingerprint scans and a digital photo from 11 Dec 2007 as part of the application process.
